Abstract

In Germany the first High-Performance Computing Center (HLRS)
was inaugurated on September 12th, 1996 at Stuttgart University.
Its primary aim is to provide the highest available computing power for
research and industrial development. It is open to all scientists in
Germany as well as to industrial research teams. HLRS together with
debis Systemhaus and Porsche AG has founded a company called
hww (H=F6chstleistungsrechner f=FCr Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft GmbH)
which operates a collection of supercomputers of different architecture=20
and performance.=20

Due to its embedding in the industrial environment of Southwest
Germany's high technology region around Stuttgart, HLRS focuses
on applications mainly from the engineering sciences like CFD,CSM
and CEM. Research groups at the HLRS itself are involved in numerous
projects - both on national and European level - targeting at the
development of HPC technologies in these fields.

This talk is intended to present the basic idea and the structure of the
center and to give an overview of scientific and industrial projects
of the HLRS
