Abstract:
In this talk, I will introduce Computational Grids, a next generation
computing infrastructure that combines aspects of both high-performance and
distributed computing to enable a whole new class of applications. Within
the Grid, the physical locality and administrative boundaries of resources
diminishes in importance, allowing computers, storage systems, display
devices, networks and people can be combined to meet the requirements of
advanced applications, including supercomputer enhanced instruments,
collaborative engineering and distributed supercomputing. I will describe
our work with the Globus Grid toolkit and illustrate the potential of the
Grid by describing a number of significant applications that have been
developed using Globus. I also discuss the role of Grid technology with
respect to traditional high-performance computing, and the possibilities of
the Grid influencing the future development of high-performance software and
applications.
