CSCS's 1999 SUMMER STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
==========================================================================

The Swiss Center for Scientific Computing (CSCS), in collaboration with other
Swiss academic institutions, will organize its fourth summer internship program
for undergraduate students in Manno (Ticino), Switzerland. CSCS's Summer
Student Internship Program (SSIP) is organized by CSCS's Section of
Interdisciplinary and Industrial Applications (I2A).

For twelve weeks between July 12 and October 1, up to six students
are each expected to complete a small research and development
project. The topics for these projects will deal with today's
problems encountered in scientific visualization, applied mechanical
engineering and software and information technology.

Student profile
---------------

Students participating in SSIP'99 should have good programming
knowledge in either C/C++, Java or Fortran. Advance knowledge in parallel
systems and parallel programming is not required. The internship
program is mainly targeted for Computer Science and Computational Science and
Engineering students, but students from Mathematics and Physics may
also apply. Candidates should have completed their Bachelor of
Science degree, or, in Europe, have passed their intermediate exams at
the university level.

Program
-------

The program will take place between July 12 and October 1,1999. Each student
will be assigned an advisor who will assist throughout her/his stay at CSCS.
Each student is expected to give two oral presentations on her/his project --
one intermediate presentation after 5 weeks, and a final presentation after the
project's completion. Each student must summarize her/his achievements in a
final technical report before the SSIP'99 completes.

Projects
--------

Project topics will be chosen from the set of projects proposed by
CSCS's specialists. See for example
(http://www.cscs.ch/Official/I2A/Education/SSIP.html).

Infrastructure
--------------

CSCS will provide all technical infrastructure, e.g., office space,
state-of-the art SGI and Sun workstations.

Financial considerations
------------------------

CSCS will cover local expenses. Support for travel costs is available.

Application process
-------------------

The application form is at http://www.cscs.ch/Official/I2A/Education/SSIP.html.
Please send your completed application by E-MAIL to SSIP@cscs.ch. Application
received after May 17, 1999 will not be considered.
