Investigating Support for a Wide-Area Publish/Subscribe Service
in a Wireless, Mobile Environment

Zeit: Freitag, 26 April 2002, 10:00 h
Ort: Bibliothek der Abteilung f=FCr Verteilte Systeme,

       Argentinierstra=DFe 8, 3. Stock, 1040 Wien

Abstract:
Wide-area publish/subscribe services are growing in importance as a
medium of communication for a variety of distributed applications.
Historically, these services have been developed in the context of a
wired, stationary network infrastructure. The obvious next question
is how well these services work when built instead on a wireless,
mobile network infrastructure. We have begun to investigate this
question by examining the issues in migrating our wide-area
publish/subscribe service, Siena, from the one world to the other.
This talk presents an early look at our initial results.
Alexander L. Wolf received the MS and Ph.D. degrees from the
University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is currently a faculty
member in the Department of Computer Science, University of Colorado
at Boulder. Prior to that he was a Member of the Technical Staff at
AT&T Bell Laboratories. Dr. Wolf's research interests are in the
discovery of principles and development of technologies to support the
engineering of large, complex software systems. He has published
papers in a variety of areas, such as software architecture, software
process, and configuration management, but more recently has
concentrated on issues of content-based network, security,
survivability, and dynamic reconfiguration. Dr. Wolf is serving as
Chair of the ACM Special Interest Group on Software Engineering, is on
the editorial boards of the ACM Transactions on Software Engineering
and Methodology and the Software Process Journal, and has been a
program chair of several international conferences.
