The Architecture of the European DataGrid

Abstract:

The European DataGrid (EDG) is a project funded by the European Union
with the aim of setting up a computational and data-intensive grid of
resources for the analysis of data coming from scientific
exploration. Next generation science will require co-ordinated
resource sharing, collaborative processing and analysis of huge
amounts of data produced and stored by many scientific laboratories
belonging to several institutions.
The project is in the middle of its second year and has successfully
passed its first EU independent review. A testbed comprising over 20
sites spread over Europe has been set up and is currently being used
by applications from the three main application areas: Particle
physics, Earth observation and Biomedics.

In this talk we will present the EDG software architecture and
discuss
the interplay of basic grid software (Globus, Condor), higher level
EDG middleware, and application software on the EDG testbed. Emphasis
will be put on specific middleware issues in job submission and data
management as well as on EDG's security architecture.
