Abstract:  The message of the talk will be that mathematics, especially
its branch scientific computing, can play a fruitful role in connection
with challenging topics of computational science.  The author will
exemplify this message at three problem classes:  (a) planning and
optimization in the cancer therapy hyperthermia, where adaptive
multilevel finite element methods for Maxwell equations play a decisive
role, the wavelength being comparable to the object's size (here: the
patient),  (b) computational drug design, where rather recent coupled
deterministic-stochastic models, named conformation dynamics meanwhile,
will be presented, and  (c) design of optical nano-chips like photonic
crystals, where again the dimensions of the chip are comparable to the
wavelength and the rather new Laplace domain method for wave-type PDEs
on unbounded spatial domains plays a crucial role.  Real-world examples
will be included in all three cases.
