Since 2002, an international group (with 75+ members today) has been
studying how to provide a standard representation for a computer
processable representation of DEVS models. DEVS is a Modeling and
Simulation framework with a sound theoretical foundation which makes it in
principle independent of various programming languages and hardware
platforms. There is a wide variety of groups working on extensions to the
DEVS formalism, with several modeling tools based on these extensions.
The goal of our group is to find a core of the DEVS formalism that is
suitable for standardization of activities at the level of modeling. It
will bridge the gap between existing simulation frameworks and modeling
activities using a standard notation. The DEVS SG will study the
possibility of developing
standards for a computer processable representation of DEVS that supports
common understanding, sharing and interoperability of DEVS implementations.
Computer processable forms include all forms of simulation and real-time
execution as well as various forms of syntactic and semantic analysis.
The effort is supported by SISO, the Simulation Interoperability
Standardization Organization (http://www.sisostds.org/) and SCS, the
Society for Modeling and Simulation International (http://www.scs.org). The
first official meeting will be held at the Spring Simulation
Interoperability Workshop (SIW), which will be held in Arlington, VA
(colocated with the SCS Advanced Simulation Technologies Conference, April
18-23 2004).
There will be different activities related to the Study Group:
. Activities with an "academic/research" perspective, including a Tutorial
on DEVS, and a session in ASTC devoted to current advances in DEVS
reserach. These activities will also provide a framework for newcomers to
learn about DEVS basics prior the SG kick-off.
. The first official meeting of the SG, on Friday 23 Apr 04 (0800-1200,
room "Potomac 3").
