TITEL: Hypermedia & the Web - Missing Links
========================================================================
ABSTRACT:
Long before the Web existed hypertext visionaries and researchers foresaw a
richly inter-linked world that allowed authors and readers alike to move
easily between related items of information in a global network. The Web
provided the infrastructure to enable those ideas to become reality but in
some ways is far more limited than many of its antecedents. Links, the
fundamental building blocks of any hypertext system, are still difficult to
author and maintain. Associative, personalised links, which formed the basis
of Vannevar Bush's off-cited article "As We May Think", are largely missing
from both the theory and the practice of building Web sites, and it is left
to search engines to fill the gaps. However, the development of the Semantic
Web promises to provide a much richer environment for exploring these ideas.
This talk will consider the missing links in today's Web environments and
look forward to a richly linked future as the Semantic Web evolves.
========================================================================
KURZBIOGRAPHIE:
Wendy Hall is Professor of Computer Science at the University of
Southampton, UK and currently Head of the School of Electronics and Computer
Science (ECS). She was the founding Head of the Intelligence, Agents,
Multimedia (IAM) Research Group in ECS. She is the co-author of the book
"Hypermedia and the Web: an Engineering Approach" (Wiley, 1999) and has
published over 300 papers in areas such as hypermedia, multimedia, digital
libraries, multi-agent systems and knowledge technologies. She is currently
President of the British Computer Society, a member of IW3C2, a member of
the executive committee of UKCRC and a non-executive director of several
companies and charitable trusts. She was awarded a CBE in 2000, and is a
Fellow of the BCS, the IEE, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the City

Dear colleagues,
it is my pleasure to invite you to a talk
"Self-Similar Blow-Up Solutions of the Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation"
by Prof. Chris Budd, University of Bath, UK
Location: Seminar room 115
4th floor
Freihaus, Turm A
Wiedner Hauptstrasse 8-10
1040 Wien
Time: Thursday, January 15th, 13:00
The talk focusses on blow-up phenomena occurring for solutions of the
classical, nonlinear Schroedinger equation. These problems arise for
example in nonlinear optics or plasma physics. When the blow-up
solutions feature self-similar solution profiles, the computation
for the original partial differential equation can be reduced to
the solution of ordinary differential equations on an unbounded domain.
This process is described in detail, and examples from relevant
applications are discussed.

LAST CALL for papers (deadline 30th of January)
Euro-Par is an annual series of international conferences dedicated to
the promotion and advancement of all aspects of parallel
computing. The major themes can be divided into the broad categories
of hardware, software, algorithms and applications for parallel
computing. The objective of Euro-Par is to provide a forum within
which to promote the development of parallel computing both as an
industrial technique and an academic discipline, extending the
frontier of both the state of the art and the state of the practice.
Euro-Par 2004 covers traditional research fields, that is topics
already covered in previous Euro-Par conferences, as well as new ones,
such as High performance bioinformatics, or topics that appeared
recently in the conference, as the Demo session.
The list of topics covered by Euro-Par 2004 sessions is the following:
* Support tools and environments
* Performance evaluation
* Scheduling and load balancing
* Compilers for high performance
* Parallel and distributed databases, data mining and knowledge
discovery
* Grid and cluster computing
* Applications on high performance computers
* Parallel computer architecture and ILP
* Distributed systems and algorithms
* Parallel programming models, methods and languages
* Numerical algorithms
* High performance multimedia
* Theory and algorithms for parallel computation
* Routing and communication in interconnection networks
* Mobile computing
* Integrated problem solving environments
* High performance bioinformatics
* Peer-to-peer and web computing
* Demo session
Full papers and research notes can be submitted. Full papers (8
pages, LNCS style papers) should present original research results.
Research notes (4 pages, LNCS style papers) may concern preliminary
results as well as ongoing, original research activities. Special
submission rules hold for the Demo session. Both full papers and
research notes must be submitted to a specific topic. Authors may
specify a secondary topic, if the case. Papers submission will be
performed electronically using the conference WEB site. Accepted
paper formats include both PDF and Postscript. The accepted papers
must be supplied in both PS or PDF and source. All accepted papers
will be included in the conference proceedings. The conference
proceedings will be published by Springer-Verlag in the LNCS series.
