The talk focusses on blow-up phenomena occurring for solutions of the
classical, nonlinear Schroedinger equation. These problems arise for
example in nonlinear optics or plasma physics. When the blow-up
solutions feature self-similar solution profiles, the computation
for the original partial differential equation can be reduced to
the solution of ordinary differential equations on an unbounded domain.
This process is described in detail, and examples from relevant
applications are discussed.
