Only w3cam complains that it can't open /dev/video and then my system hard-crashed. It also seems to have wrecked my ethernet in the process, but I'll delve into that separately. Is it possible to use a USB/CPiA webcam on a dual processor box at this point? I've done it, but not recently. The w3cam error is interesting. Does xawtv or anything work correctly? Does it work fine with a uniprocessor kernel? Specifically I'm getting "Can't open device /dev/video". I think this is a permission issue because the webserver runs as nobody. But I'm not quite sure how to fix it. The w3camd seems to work ok, but I can't repeatedly get images that are of quality. They end up having black streaks or noise. Perhaps this is a sync issue? Or maybe an interrupt issue? The result is a cpia-control program. It has all the controls of the old gqcam and some more (flicker control, manual compression control, more sensor-fps settings, ...). To the driver this means that the non-v4l ioctl kludge is gone. Use the new control program to do those settings. The stuff should appear on the web-page as soon as Jarl reads his e-mail and finds some time. :) Note that the special gqcam-client will be gone completely really soon now. I am working with the upstream author to incorporate my changes. So the next official version of gqcam should support cpia-based cameras too. Here is the list of changes: 1999-12-06 v0.4.4 Patches from Peter Pregler : - fix for vic: treat VIDEO_PALETTE_YUV422 as VIDEO_PALETTE_YUYV - fix version kernel message output 1.2->1.02 - removed vidwin.flag kludge - new python-gtk control-client - maximum value for y/uv-thresholds seems to be 31 and not 255 - corrected a bug with centreWeight proc value - maximum value for targetFR is 30, 255 is unreasonable And here is the list of stuff that can be controlled/viewed by the new control-client. Read the README and the TODO in the control-client directory. They might be more important.:) FEATURES - camera status (fps/thruput) - setting color/brighness/contrast - compression control (incl. manual/auto parameters) - flicker control settings - all possible sensor fps settings Now for the bad news. There are still at least two grave problems with the drivers: - seems to be unstable for firmware version 1.02, need more debug output on that, I don't have such a camera - saving exposure state still does not work Enjoy, Peter ------------------------------- Email: Peter.Pregler@risc.uni-linz.ac.at WWW: http://www.risc.uni-linz.ac.at/people/ppregler ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe from this mailinglist, send the line "unsubscribe vision-webcam" in the body of a message to "majordomo@errors.no". I have bttv tv-card (/dev/video0) on my machine and then cpia as /dev/video1. Could it be possible to get "autodetection" or at least cmd line options for detecting/selecting different video sources. Video source selectors seems to be missing both gqcam and your gtk cpia-control utility. With gtk-control-utility it would be easy to automatically pick the /proc/cpia/video# (since there typically are just one of them). If there are more then pick the first automagically and provide options (cmd-line and GUI) to change it. Could you add selectors for "max_gain" (+other misc features like ecp_timing, exposure_mode) in the control-utility. Also could we also have "auto" compression on as default? Anyway 0.4.4 seems to work (both driver&utilities) :) Great work! With 0.4.3 and streamer (from xawtv) I once managed to complete freeze my machine (2.2.12/non-SMP), but I coudn't duplicate the problem.... I have a little (I suppose) problem concerning the goals of the CPiA compressor. On the objectives of the Autocompression, the Software Developer User's Guide atests that compression and quality are conflicting goals (obviously). The parameters used to express this are "TargetFR" and "TargetQ". TargetFR is a measure of Data Rate (Frames per second). The question is: When the target is "Quality", What is the figure of merit used as a measure of "Quality" ? What is the meaning of the number TargetQ ? Is it a measure of Mean Square Error? Degradation of something? Thanks in advance ! Cassio. ================================================================= PS: Anyone intend to come to the Tropical summer (I Live in Brazil) ? Hi Peter.

After "stable" cpia-0.4.4 version = yesterday, i have the clean
source-tree with
your patch 1.02 include, compile, modules load, and = test with vidcat.
BUT:
the same error msg "Can`t open device = /dev/video"     :(
since last i.o.-test yesterday and rerun w/o success = today only pc run
24h.

Kernel log -> Attach.
Some time error 0x31 and vp-status 0x01, and minutes = later error 0x20
and
vp-status 0x05 are reported.

I can now restart the gqcam client as many times as I want... good job for me ( but apparently it broke sth for 1.2 cams ??? ) Anyway, here, SMP and V1.02 OK. Is there any solution for this ? Since you can kill the processes I really think this is a problem of the cgi/webserver/whatsoever and not of the driver. -Peter ------------------------------- Email: Peter.Pregler@risc.uni-linz.ac.at WWW: http://www.risc.uni-linz.ac.at/people/ppregler ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe from this mailinglist, send the line "unsubscribe vision-webcam" in the body of a message to "majordomo@errors.no". Using Tk/Tcl you can set most of the parameters, while others can easily be added, and snapshot pictures can be displayed and saved. It is not much of an application, certainly for the end-users, but still, I didn't want to hold this back. One can download it from the page: which might not be up 100% of the time btw. It was still based on the 0.4.3 driver but I imagine it will work also on the 0.4.4. Furthermore it has no DMA support yet. Of another interest, I've seen some reports on the possible status on SMP machines. My machine is a dual PII and I personally have seen no problems with the later drivers (from 0.4.x up). I have however noticed that a /sbin/modprobe parport_probe is necessary getting the driver to work, which after the /sbin/modprobe partport is not mentioned in the docs. This is probably because I run Slackware in which this is not automaticly included. Hope you find this program useful. \Berry -- X University of Amsterdam, Berry A.W. van Halderen |X| Department of Computer Science finger:berry@night.wins.uva.nl X The Netherlands ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe from this mailinglist, send the line "unsubscribe vision-webcam" in the body of a message to "majordomo@errors.no". I always try to do it against the latest pre release since quite often they have big fixes as well. However, I can make one against the last major release this time since it's so big. System: Intel P3-500, 128mb ram, Creative II USB, RedHat 6.1, kernel 2.3.33, vidcat 0.6.2 2.3.31 seems stable and runs without any problems. 2.3.32 however proved unstable. I ran vidcat from a crontab job and basically the system would lock up every now and then. I strongly suspect this to be because of the webcam, since that is basically the only thing the system was doing the second before it crashed. Crashes appear to be at random intervals (eg. it works for a couple of hours, the next time it crashes after 10 minutes). 2.3.33 again, seems stable. Had the camera run in a cron job again, grabbing images every minute and uploading them in the background. When adding plenty of light the images are clear and good quality. The problem is the amount of light. I have the feeling I can see more in the windows images than I can see in the Linux version. I dont know if Jorg Martens' patches would've improved this as well. regards, Remco http://remco.xgov.net > > Markus > -- > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Markus Eiden http://www.eiden.de/ > Berufsbildende Schule 1, Worms http://bbs1.biz-worms.de/ > Bildungsserver Rheinland-Pfalz http://bildung-rp.de/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe from this mailinglist, send the line "unsubscribe vision-webcam" in the body of a message to "majordomo@errors.no".
