I was able to get 16/24/32 run on my X-server. It is really an issue of
the layout of the image-buffer with respect to the X-server hardware. I
will send a patch to Jarl.

The threshold-settings were the bad ones. Setting it too high
(resulting in too much compression) introduces some form of
heavy afterglow and a corny picture in regions of a low intensity
gradient.
