Geee, could someone add this to some FAQ? I am tired of writing this every few weeks: 1) Connect the USB-camera. 2) Boot linux. 3) Insert the module for the USB-core driver. 4) Use lsub or some similar tool to check what vendor/product id the camera has. Here for a genuine CPiA: lsusb |fgrep id idVendor 0x0553 VLSI Vision Ltd. idProduct 0x0002 CPiA Camera or simply check your syslog for the following message: Feb 1 21:19:35 gretel kernel: usb.c: USB new device connect, assigned device number 3 Feb 1 21:19:35 gretel kernel: usb.c: USB device 3 (prod/vend 0x553/0x2) is not claimed by any active driver. 5) Check out www.linux-usb.org for a driver supporting that ids. -Peter -- You can weave your life so long - only so long, and then a thing in the world out of your control will tug at one vital thread and leave you patternless and subdued. ------------------------------- Email: Peter_Pregler@email.com From jburley@kuci.org Fri, 02 Feb 2001 09:58:13 -0800 Date: Fri, 02 Feb 2001 09:58:13 -0800 From: Joshua Burley jburley@kuci.org Subject: [cpia] ZoomCam USB So, no one has gotten one of these cameras to work? I just got the driver working with my Ezonics EZ-Cam and the 2.4.1 kernel. This driver rocks!!! Thanks loads for spending the time to develop it. I used my camera for a brief while with Win95 before upgrading to Win2000. After the upgrade, lo and behold, Ezonics doesn't provide a driver for this camera for Win2000! Much nagging on my part didn't seem to budge them at all in the direction of developing a driver for me, so I thought, "Hey, I wonder if I can find a driver for Linux?" And guess what? First off, it is a powered USB device meaning it won't work on non-powered hubs. I can use the ezonics camera if I plug directly into my computer but if I use the built in hub on my MS internet pro keyboard, it wont work. Alos, are you sure you are using the proper USB kernel options. There is UHCI or OHCI I think. I remember when I installed 2.4.0 stable the first time that menuconfig only shows the UHCI option unless you turn it off then you are able to see the OHCI optuion. It looks as if the format of the "struct video_device" has changed in the file /usr/src/linux/include/linux/videodev.h. Specificly, in cpia.c the statement causing the error is: static struct video_device cpia_template = { "CPiA Camera", VID_TYPE_CAPTURE, VID_HARDWARE_CPIA, cpia_open, /* open */ cpia_close, /* close */ cpia_read, /* read */ NULL, /* no write */ NULL, /* no poll */ cpia_ioctl, /* ioctl */ cpia_mmap, /* mmap */ cpia_video_init, /* initialize */ NULL, /* priv */ 0, /* busy */ -1 /* minor - unset */ }; The structure is now defined in /usr/src/linux/include/linux/videodev.h as: struct video_device { struct module *owner; char name[32]; int type; int hardware; int (*open)(struct video_device *, int mode); void (*close)(struct video_device *); long (*read)(struct video_device *, char *, unsigned long, int noblock); /* Do we need a write method ? */ long (*write)(struct video_device *, const char *, unsigned long, int noblock); #if LINUX_VERSION_CODE >= 0x020100 unsigned int (*poll)(struct video_device *, struct file *, poll_table *); #endif int (*ioctl)(struct video_device *, unsigned int , void *); int (*mmap)(struct video_device *, const char *, unsigned long); int (*initialize)(struct video_device *); void *priv; /* Used to be 'private' but that upsets C++ */ int busy; int minor; devfs_handle_t devfs_handle; }; Note that they don't match up. I tried inserting a NULL pointer at the beginning and setting devfs_handle to 0. It fixed the compilation error, but I have no idea what what the struct module *owner pointer should be set to, or what should be used for the devfs_handle. By the way this was using gcc 2.95.3 on a Mandrake 7.2 box. Cheers, Michael -- Michael Jarvis michael@jarvis.com http://www.jarvis.com/home.php "Freiheit stirbt in kleinen Stücken." Sue me. :-) I downloaded kernel-2.4.2-2mdk.src.rpm from rpmfind.net (part of Mandrake Cooker), rebuilt the kernel RPMs, and then installed them. I guess maybe Mandrake has added some weirdness to their RPMs. It wouldn't be the first time. -michael -- Michael Jarvis michael@jarvis.com http://www.jarvis.com/home.php "Freiheit stirbt in kleinen Stücken." Hey, I'm wondering how configurable the camera is. Like, right now my EZonics EZcam has some pretty poor quality with gqcam-0.9 and I'm hoping to improve upon it. Anyone who has a EZonics, is it the EZonics poor quality? I would like to set up the cam to output to a webpage and have it like a JavaApplet or script or somthing, so that I can check on the house while I'm gone and see movement, not just stills. Like the way those 'live feeds' on porn sites are, heh. But, mine will be for personal security :-) ------_=_NextPart_001_01C0A1A4.AC723C10 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1"
I've had the opportunity to play with several webcams:

Kensington VideoCam
Ezonics EZcam
IBM PC Camera
Logictech QuickCam Web

Out of these four, the Ezonics is definitely my favorite (I've owned the Kensington, Ezonics, and IBM.  My brother has the Logictech.)
