Hi,

check out the syslog. There should be an error-message. Also I think
the redirection should be an append:

root@gretel:~# cat /proc/cpia/video1  |grep brig
brightness:                    0         0       100        50
root@gretel:~# echo "brightness:                   1" >> /proc/cpia/video1
root@gretel:~# cat /proc/cpia/video1  |grep brig
brightness:                    1         0       100        50

So it works here. As for the command itself, it will not have any
effect because of the gain-control. Use cpia-control to get a feeling
what effects changing of parameters has.
