The workshop will be a two-day event to be held at the Technische
Universität München. It is the goal of the workshop to bring together
experts from the commercial and scientific arena in order to discuss
aspects of performance-oriented program development for distributed
architectures.

You are invited to give a presentation. Deadline for submission of
abstracts is January 15th. See details below.

Background:

In scientific computing we see a shift from parallel computing on
dedicated parallel machines to "high performance distributed
computing", where a combination of parallel and distributed
environments can be employed for large scale problem solving.

Distributed architectures, based on Internet and mobile computing
technologies, are also important target architectures in the domain of
commercial computing. A large number of applications, such as data
mining, video on-demand, and e-commerce, require powerful server
systems, which are quite similar to the parallel systems used in high
performance computing applications.

On one side, there is an uptake of programming standards from the
commercial arena into high performance computing since these standards
facilitate meta-computing, as well as programmers from universities
being trained in these programming styles. On the other hand, a huge
experience in performance analysis exists in the area of high
performance computing that might be applicable to the commercial
arena.

Workshop topics

Appropriate topics include (but are not restricted to):

- Performance critical applications - including mobile applications
- Base technologies for performance measurement
- Employment of mobile objects to enable the measurement and
  tuning of applications
- Performance analysis and tuning tools - including automation techniques
- Tools to support application scalability
- Performance analysis support for Global computing and resource management
- Performance analysis support for databases and networks
- Engineering methods and tools to support the development and
  management of e-services

Structure

The workshop will have invited presentation from experts from the
scientific and commercial arena in the following areas:

- Application requirements and performance engineering
- Languages, middleware, and component-based programming
- Performance analysis tools
- Trends in architectures and environments

Please check the PADDA web site for the current list of speakers.

In each of the areas we will also have session for short presentations
and position statements by other participants.

Submission

We invite you to participate in the workshop. Please submit an one
page abstract including your name, affiliation, and email
address. Send a postscript or pdf version to Omer F. Rana
(O.F.Rana@cs.cf.ac.uk).

Important dates

Submission deadline January 15th, 2001
Notification of acceptance February 15th, 2001
Early registration March 15th, 2001
Workshop April 19th-20th, 2001

Publication

There will be special issue of Scientific Programming based on the
workshop. Selected authors will be invited after the workshop to
submit a full paper for the special issue.

Organizer

The workshop is organized within the framework of KONWIHR, the
Competence Network for Scientific High Performance Computing in
Bavaria. KONWIHR is being funded by the German state of Bavaria with
the goal to support high-performance computing in science and industry
(konwihr.informatik.tu-muenchen.de/index_e.html). It is focussing on
the current high-performance computers at the Leibniz-Rechenzentrum in
Munich, especially on the first German Teraflop computer Hitachi
SR8000.

Sponsors

The workshop is sponsored by KONWIHR, Sun Microsystems and Objectivity.
