video dev

i've installed v4l in character devices ----> video for linux
made kernel and modules. rebooted,
then i loaded the modules :
-usbcore.o
-usb-uchi.o
-cpia.o

then when i try to grab a picture from the creative usb webcamII i get this
message : Can't open device file: /dev/video
there is a symbolic ling in /dev/ named video, which points to video0.

Can anybody tell me why the device file can't be opened.

I'm using 2.3.18ac10.
