another thing is that after modprob'ing parport and cpia_pp in 
/var/log/messsages it
says the following

Mar  2 20:30:45 Little modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-6

refering to conf.modules char-major-6 is aliased to lp. is this a problem ? 
i do not
use a printer on that machine.
